On July 13 and 14, Lipscomb University sprang to life as new students arrived on campus to attend the July ADVANCE orientation session.

Run by the university’s Quest Orientation Team, ADVANCE is the 48-hour summer orientation session where first-time students gather on campus to officially begin their Lipscomb journey. Before the fall semester commences, new students and their parents are invited to attend one of the three ADVANCE sessions held in June, July, or August.

During the two-day ADVANCE session, incoming students tour Lipscomb’s campus, make their student IDs, meet department heads, attend informational sessions, and also select and register for fall semester classes. Parents of the students spend the two days meeting with university personnel and attending informational sessions of their own.

Parents and students attend some ADVANCE sessions together and some apart, learning about everything from residence hall living and global learning programs to university expectations and financial aid.

Amidst the informational sessions, students also have time to participate in fun activities, explore the grounds, and network with other incoming freshman and transfer students. New students stay in the campus dormitories together and frequently break out into small groups, giving students a glimpse into college life while also giving them the chance to connect with many of their peers.

“Coming into ADVANCE, I only knew my roommate,” incoming freshman, Lauren Guthrie, remarked “but during the group activities everyone was so nice and friendly. I’m excited to be in such a welcoming environment surrounded by people who love Jesus as much as I do.”

Lipscomb ADVANCE offers the unique opportunity for students to learn about college life and academics while also having fun and celebrating the transition, Leanna Marriott, Quest Team member for two summers, observed.

“We do it in a fun way,” Marriott continued, “integrating technical things like registering for classes while having a good time and giving them an inside look into what their school year will look like.”

The July session of ADVANCE concluded on July 14. Lipscomb’s final ADVANCE session will be held on August 14-15, followed by Quest Week, Lipscomb’s weeklong orientation program for freshman and transfer students, and the commencement of fall classes.
